The Lovers of Valdaro

This Neolithic double burial was uncovered in Italy back in 2007, on the outskirts of Mantua. Both the man (left) and the woman (right) were aged 18 to 20 when they died, around 4000 BC. This is a deliberate burial, so they were buried in this embrace. The discovery got a lot of play in the Italian press at the time, and reporters called them "stone age Romeo and Juliet" before settling on the "Lovers of Valdaro" as their title. The grave was removed from the ground as one piece and has just gone on display in Mantua.
