US Birth Rate Hits Lowest Level Ever

New data from the Census Bureau shows that the birth rate in the U.S. fell to less than 62 per 1,000 women of childbearing age (15 to 44). That translates into a total fertility of about 1.9 per woman over her lifetime, below the replacement rate. But note that the total  number of births is holding steady in the 4 million per year range, which should keep our population over 300 million for a long time to come.
